Family life is a busy, chaotic, magical, maddening mess with a majority of it spent running around in circles searching for things - usually shoes. It’s hard to remember what our lives were like before it all turned crazy and it’s even more difficult to imagine what our lives will look like without all the morning madness, the constant snack fetching and finding of all the things but we know that life, as we know it now, will eventually be very different. Our children will grow up. Leave home. Spread their wings. Lead lives of their own....maybe even create little mini lives of their own....
and when that time comes, all we’ll have left are our memories; kept alive through the telling of our stories. Stories about that time mum left the house with her pants on inside out, how we all noticed but no one said anything because, well, we were assholes’. We’ll laugh about that pet dog we had - the one with the mental issues that everyone was afraid of because it was an asshole too. We’ll pull out our family albums and reminisce about the days that once were and a life that once was. We’ll study the pictures, laugh at our ridiculous hairstyles, poke fun about how anyone thought acid wash jeans were an acceptable fashion item but mostly, we’ll stare in astonishment about how much everyone and everything has changed, or hasn’t changed.
What would life be like without photos I wonder. Without these mini portals into our past capturing our moments, our story, our life - the joy, excitement, that time, that person, the love...all the love...bringing us right back to that moment. Stirring emotions and evoking long forgotten memories. And as time continues to slip past us, as our children grow and our place has evolved into something new, the more we’ll cherish the memories we’ve managed to preserve.
Peace, love & happy snaps.
